01 β The founding story & the 4 pillars
It started with one question: is this a real business, or is it just hype?
Most first investments are made on a feeling. A name is trending on TikTok or X, a group chat is buzzing, a headline promises a jump β and the money moves before anyone asks what the company sells or whether it makes a profit.
Why the name? In ancient Athens, the owl of Athena was the symbol of wisdom: a bird that sees clearly in the dark. Athenian Owl does the same job for Everyday Investors, helping you see through market hype before it costs you money.
Athenian Owl was built for disciplined South African savers. While others chased unexplained stock spikes or fell for crypto and forex schemes, they wanted substance over speculationβdemanding to understand a business before buying a single share.
Every Athenian Owl report answers the same 3 questions: what the company actually does, how much speculation is priced into its share price, and what could go wrong. The same shape applies whether you are reading about Capitec, Coca-Cola or a company we have never listed before.
We deliberately kept the boring parts in: fees, debt, dividends, TFSA limits, the difference between a rand hedge and a domestic retailer. Those are the parts that decide whether a portfolio survives a bad year β and they are exactly the parts a hype-driven feed skips.
